Permanent Representation
Since 1999, Ireland has established a Permanent Representation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg in order to represent Ireland’s interests within the Organisation and in keeping with our government policies and strategies.
The Role of the Irish Mission
Members of the Irish Delegation monitor and actively participate in meetings of the Committee of Ministers’ Deputies and in the work of the Council of Europe’s various rapporteur groups. The Mission acts as a liaison between the Council of Europe and participating States, and the Irish national authorities.

As a Member State, Ireland contributes approximately €6 million to the Ordinary Budget of the Council of Europe each year.

The major bodies of the Council of Europe are the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe.
The Commissioner for Human Rights also plays a major role in protecting human rights in Council of Europe member states.
