Ireland signs Memorandum of Understanding to support America’s 250th anniversary

Ireland has taken a major step in strengthening its transatlantic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, the organisation responsible for planning the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence in 2026.

The agreement was signed on September 9, 2025, in Washington, D.C. by Ireland’s Ambassador to the United States Geraldine Byrne Nason. The agreement highlights Ireland’s deep historical, cultural, and familial links with the United States, and underscores a shared commitment to celebrate the enduring transatlantic bond.

The MoU sets out a framework for cooperation between Ireland and the U.S. throughout 250th anniversary celebrations, including cultural exchanges, educational programmes, and events in both countries. It also grants Ireland ‘special status in recognition of its unique contribution to the foundation of the United States of America.’
