Historic connections between Ireland and Mexico date back to the Spanish colonisation of Mexico. Several Spanish viceroys, notably the last Spanish viceroy, Juan O’Donojú, were of Irish descent.

During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Irish-American immigrants in the US Army, defected to fight on the Mexican side. The Batallón de San Patricio remains a symbol of the bond between Ireland and Mexico.
