A shared history

Ireland and Malawi share a rich history of connection, with Irish missionaries playing a role in supporting the transition to multi-party democracy in Malawi in the 1990s.

The friendship between Ireland and Malawi has grown from strength to strength over the past number of decades, built on shared ideals and values. Ireland’s development programme remains the focus of Ireland’s engagement in Malawi, which is increasingly complimented by educational, cultural and economic ties.
