Ireland’s relationship with Malawi

Friendly relations

Ireland values its relationship with Malawi. As one of a small number of countries with a resident embassy in Malawi, Ireland has earned a reputation as a reliable, responsive and trusted partner, maintaining warm and friendly relations with successive governments. This relationship is fostered by mutual respect, many common values and the high-level political engagements that regularly take place.

President Michael D Higgins is one of very few western Heads of State to ever visit Malawi, visiting the country in 2014. There have been a number of ministerial visits since, with the Malawian Foreign Minister Nancy Tembo visiting Ireland in 2022 and the Irish Minister of State for Overseas Development and Diaspora Seán Fleming visiting Malawi in 2023.

Advancing Ireland and Malawi’s shared interests

Ireland’s development programme in Malawi has four main areas of focus: good governance, empowerment of young women, food and energy security, and reducing the risks and impact of humanitarian crises.

Ireland in Malawi is committed to building strong political partnerships to address national, regional and global challenges. A priority is to support Malawi’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on the furthest behind first, with women a priority group. Ireland works with a variety of partners, from government institutions, UN agencies, research institutes and NGOs across Malawi.

Beyond development - A partnership of equals

People-to-people links between Ireland and Malawi are strong, with a small but vibrant Irish community in Malawi. Most Irish people in Malawi are involved in the development sector, with a small number involved in the private sector. Educational and cultural links are expanding, with Malawian alumni of the Ireland Fellows Programme making a strong impact across many walks of life in Malawi.

The first ever Malawi-Ireland Soccer Exchange took place in August 2024. The pilot was intended to showcase the possibility of building sporting and cultural connections between Malawi and Ireland.

The exchange saw a number of promising Malawi footballers travel to Ireland for a tour, fostering institutional, cultural and sporting connections between Malawi and Ireland, while at the same time providing professional pathways for promising young athletes when such opportunities may not be otherwise available.
