Minister Richmond meets EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Horn of Africa to discuss Sudan crisis

The Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, today met with the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, to discuss the ongoing crisis in Sudan.

The visit by EUSR Weber comes at an important time, in the early days of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, and provides an opportunity to focus attention on the conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian and displacement crisis.

The Irish Presidency will pursue strengthened EU engagement, and seek to further develop joint EU positions on Sudan, including with a focus on civilian dialogue and mediation efforts, and on humanitarian assistance and access.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister of State Richmond said:

Ireland is a consistent advocate on Sudan and seeks to keep the crisis high on the international agenda. It must not be side lined or forgotten and it is imperative that we end the immense suffering of the Sudanese people. I had a very productive meeting with EU Special Representative Weber today on these issues, and on our collective engagement on the wider Horn of Africa.

On Sudan, I am particularly alarmed by the escalating violence in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. I urge all parties to the conflict, particularly the Rapid Support Forces, to step back from the brink, and to refrain for any actions that fuel further violence. I urge all parties to return to the negotiating table and to ensure rapid, unimpeded and sustainable humanitarian access.

While in Dublin, EUSR Weber will also engage with the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and give a keynote address to the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA).
