Africa Day at Royal Hospital Kilmainham kicks off nationwide celebrations
Over 50 performers, artists and organisations involved in this year’s celebration in Dublin.
Thousands of people gathered on Sunday 17 May at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham for Africa Day Dublin 2026, a vibrant family-friendly celebration of African cultures, music, dance, food and community.
The free flagship event, organised in partnership between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Dublin City Council, celebrated the diversity, vibrancy and richness of African cultures, as well as the growing links between Ireland and countries across the African continent.
Visitors enjoyed a full day of performances, workshops and cultural activities across the festival site, with more than 50 performers, artists and organisations taking part throughout the day.
Some highlights from this year’s programme included:
- Cultural village with over 20 organisations showcasing their traditions and heritage.
- Children's area with lots of games and activities for all ages to enjoy including a treasure hunt, a photo booth and a spinning wheel on the sustainable development goals.
- On the main stage, singer Asha Ari, and the Discovery Gospel Choir entertained the crowds along with an amazing dance performance from the Presidential Dance Cypher.
- Rhythm stage hosted by Lapree Lala, included a performance from Southside Moves, Afrokids Ireland, and Official PAK. Along with interactive drumming workshops throughout the day.
- At the Spoken Word tent, Leon Diop of Black and Irish hosted a live podcast, Voices of the Diaspora open mic session and a number of panel discussions.
It was wonderful day attended by over 7,000 people, despite the occassional rain shower which didn't dampen spirits.
Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, said:
Africa Day at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham has become a fantastic family day out, bringing communities together through music, dance, food and culture.
It has been great to see such strong attendance at this year’s event and I want to thank everyone involved in making Africa Day 2026 such a success, including the performers, community groups, organisers, volunteers and visitors who helped create such a positive and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.
Africa Day events are taking place nationwide over the coming weeks. I encourage people to visit AfricaDay.ie to find out what is happening around the country.
