Mission information
The Permanent Representation of Ireland to the Council of Europe brings together Irish civil servants and diplomats, supported by locally recruited staff members.
What is the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the Council of Europe?
Our main function is to promote and represent Ireland’s interests at the Council of Europe. We work to shape the organisation’s policies and to ensure Ireland’s interests are represented within its various bodies. We promote Irish values and contribute to deepening cooperation with our European partners. The Mission acts as a liaison between the Council of Europe and participating States, and the Irish national authorities.
Ireland participates in the Council of Europe by actively upholding and promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, including being a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and a member of monitoring mechanisms like the Venice Commission. Ireland also participates in the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), Congress of Local and Regional Authorities and various cooperation activities of the organisation. During its 2022 Presidency, Ireland focused on strengthening human rights standards and defending the multilateral system.
