Ireland's relationship with Serbia
Ireland and Serbia have maintained diplomatic relations in various capacities since 1977.
First with SFR Yugoslavia in 1977, then the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 2006, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the latter of which Serbia is considered the sole legal successor.
Deepening relations
Today, Ireland and Serbia are committed to deepening our relations. The decision to open an Embassy in Belgrade represents a clear statement of Ireland’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations between our two great countries.
EU enlargement
It also speaks to our commitment to European Union enlargement, particularly as we take up the presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2026.
Ireland has benefited immensely from membership of the European Union. Over 50 years of European Union membership have transformed our economy and society and amplified our global influence.
Ireland remains a strong supporter of the enlargement process and Serbia’s EU path. We will support all candidates on their EU path if their people, governments and parliaments take the necessary steps.
Irish culture in Serbia
Irish culture, including art, literature and music, has a strong reputation amongst those living in Serbia. Serbian people have a keen interest in some of our most famous poets, playwrights and authors.
Despite there being a relatively small Irish diaspora living here, the Belgrade Irish Festival is the largest annual exhibition of the arts from Ireland in South-Eastern Europe.
The weeklong event concludes on St Patrick's Day and is the brainchild of Dubliner Jas Kaminski who has made Belgrade his home. It has been supported by Culture Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs since 2012.
Economic relations
Irish companies are exploring business opportunities and increased trade links with Serbia and the surrounding region. The most important areas of cooperation to date have been information technology, food production and construction material.
In 2023, Ireland’s exports were valued at €107 million, with import figures from Serbia amounting to just under €23 million.
Irish people in Serbia
A small but vibrant Irish diaspora lives in Serbia. Many came to work here years ago deciding to make their home here permanently. Those that have stayed feel the connection between our two countries.
The incredible warmth and hospitality of the Serbian people can often remind Irish people who visit of of home.
