Ireland's relationship with Malaysia

Ireland and Malaysia’s strong bilateral ties are largely rooted in the field of education. From our missionaries who traversed the country contributing to education throughout Malaysia, to the many Malaysians who have undertaken their studies at Irish institutions over recent decades, education has and continues to be a core feature of our bilateral relationship.

A signal of the strength of this relationship was the decision to open Ireland’s first South East Asian Embassy in Malaysia in 1995. While our network of Missions in the region has grown, so too has our team at the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Promoting partnership

The Embassy team is committed to promoting Irish interests in Malaysia, as well as strengthening our political and economic relationships. This is often achieved through collaboration with Irish state agencies such as Education in Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Bord Bia (the Irish Food Board).

Working alongside Malaysian stakeholders has been critical to our efforts in increasing educational partnerships, boosting the activity of Irish businesses in Malaysia, in addition to expanding the great quality Irish food and drink products available to Malaysian consumers.

The Irish Chamber of Commerce also has a presence in Malaysia and works to support the growth of Irish businesses in the country.

Community and cultural connections

The considerably sized Irish community in Malaysia have invaluably strengthened the friendship between our two countries. The St Patrick’s Society of Selangor celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 and is renowned for its celebration of our national day.

No group better embodies the Irish community spirit than our Gaelic athletics clubs. Kuala Lumpur’s Orang Éire is highly active in bringing people together from across the multicultural city to play Ireland’s national sports, with the team also recognised for its efforts in supporting vulnerable communities through fundraising and volunteering.

In 2024, Ireland became a member of EUNIC in Kuala Lumpur. EUNIC is a network of the European Union’s National Institutes for Culture. The Embassy is looking forward to further celebrations of Irish culture, be it language, film, or dance, across Malaysia in the coming years.
