Global Book Giveaway

Sharing Irish writing

Sharing stories has always been at the heart of Irish culture, around kitchen tables, in pub snugs and in well-worn novels passed between friends. Though we are a small island, Irish literature has travelled far, helping to shape global literary traditions, inspiring generations of writers and forging deep connections with readers across continents.

Bloomsday and Beyond builds on that instinct to share our stories. This year, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Ireland’s global network of Embassies and Consulates, is collaborating with local partners to run the Global Book Giveaway, distributing books by Irish authors in towns and cities around the world.

Global Book Giveaway

The Global Book Giveaway first ran in 2021 and 2002, where in total over 8,000 copies of James Joyce’s works were distributed across six continents and in 20 languages.

From remote schools in the Australian outback to street libraries and train stations in major cities, Irish diplomats partnered with a huge mix of local organisations to bring these books to new readers, as part of Bloomsday celebrations. The Giveaway helped to support a global celebration of Irish literature and was a testament to the enduring relevance of Joyce.

A selection of Irish books by both classic and contemporary authors.

In 2025, the Global Book Giveaway is returning in a refreshed form. This time, the initiative will highlight a broader sweep of Irish literary talent, including works by both classic and contemporary authors, in English and in translated versions to local languages.

This year, over 40 Embassies and Consulates from near and far will distribute over 3,600 books in 20 languages in conjunction with a diverse range of local partners.

Check your local Embassy or Consulate to find out how you can take part in the Giveaway.
