Ousmanou Abdou's path to political leadership in Cameroon
His election builds on years of involvement in Sightsavers’ Irish Aid supported citizenship and political participation programme. Ousmanou, who leads the People and Parents with Disabilities Association of Maroua and is Vice-President of the National Committee of Youth with Disabilities in Cameroon, sees his election as both an honour and a responsibility.
He chose to stand for election to ensure that young people with disabilities, often marginalised and underrepresented, are heard in decision-making spaces. In the past, Ousmanou has faced stigma, social prejudice, limited financial resources and a lack of representation.
Politics is a powerful tool for change.
With support from Sightsavers Ireland - including leadership training, guidance on inclusive decision-making, advocacy work, and exchange visits - he built the skills and confidence he needed to run for office.
As Youth Senator, his priorities include improving accessibility, raising awareness of voter registration, promoting inclusive public policies and empowering young people through training and advocacy.
His advice to other young people is simple: remain determined, build strong networks, and do not allow discrimination to discourage you. Politics, he says, is a powerful tool for change.
