Visiting the Vatican

Useful information on visiting the Vatican, including Papal General Audiences, the Angelus and writing to His Holiness

Papal General Audiences

General Audiences with the Pope are usually held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

The General Audience usually takes place in St. Peter's Square, however if the weather is inclement it may be moved to the St. Paul VI Hall inside the Vatican.

Tickets are required for the General Audience. Please note that all tickets are free of charge.

Tickets should be requested from the Prefecture of the Papal Household using the request form their website: https://eventi.pontificalisdomus.va/?lang=en-us and collected according to the instructions received from the Pontifical Household.

Dates for upcoming General Audience can be found here: https://eventi.pontificalisdomus.va/?lang=en-us

Audiences are usually suspended during July and when the Pope is travelling.

On the day of the Audience, prepare for security checks and metal detectors before entering. It is recommended to arrive early especially during peak travel seasons.

Dress Code: Modest attire is required; shoulders and knees should be covered to enter the Vatican area.

The Angelus

The Angelus is held each Sunday at midday in St. Peter's Square and is presided over by the Pope. Tickets are not required for this event.

When attending the Sunday Angelus, you can expect security checks before entering the Piazza.

Visiting St Peter's Basilica or the Sistine Chapel

It is now possible to book entrance slots to visit St Peter's Basilica. We strongly recommend only using the official Vatican site for the Basilica and the Vatican Museums including Sistine Chapel and Vatican Gardens.
