Celebrating 25 years of Munich Colmcilles GAA Club
There were smiles, stories and plenty of blue and white on display as the club brought together generations of players, supporters and friends to mark an incredible milestone for GAA in Germany.
What started in July 2001 as a spontaneous meet up in a park in the centre of the city, became Germany’s first ever GAA club. Since then, Munich Colmcilles has grown into one of continental Europe’s most successful GAA stories. 25 years later, the club is not only home to Irish players, but also to members from Germany and across the world.
“When I joined back in 2019, I had limited knowledge of Irish culture. Now, seven years later, I’m marrying a Mayo man I met through the club. Being part of this group has changed my life and brought me so much joy. I am proud to be an honorary member of the Irish community!”

The anniversary celebrations were a fitting tribute to the club’s journey, with displays of all nearly all GAA codes: Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and rounders. Teams were comprised of both current members and older ‘legends’, some of whom played for the club when it was first founded.
A visit from Michael Darragh MacAuley
The club also invited special guest Michael Darragh MacAuley, holder of eight All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals and two All-Star awards, to join them in their celebrations.
The former Dublin/Ballyboden St Enda’s footballer coached youth skills clinics for the younger members of the club and even picked up a hurley and to join the senior team during their hurling showcase.
Later that evening, the club came together for an anniversary dinner to celebrate and reminisce on the last 25 years. Michael Darragh MacAuley also took part in a fireside-style chat with club member Niall McCorley, where he shared his thoughts and insights into the world of Gaelic Games (as well as a few stories from his days on the Dublin team!).
While silverware has certainly found its way to Munich over the years, members agree that the club’s biggest achievement has been the community it has built. For countless newcomers arriving in Munich, Colmcilles has offered more than a place to train – it has provided connections, support, and, for many, a home away from home.

Looking around the celebrations, it was easy to see that Munich Colmcilles has become more than a sports club. It is a place where Gaelic games have flourished, where newcomers are welcomed with open arms and memories continue to be made every season.
As the club raises a toast to its first 25 years, attention is already turning to the next chapter. If the past quarter of a century is anything to go by, Munich Colmcilles will continue to thrive – both on and off the pitch – bringing people together through sport, friendship and the unmistakable spirit of the GAA.
