Peace Heroines: extraordinary Irish women involved in the Northern Ireland Peace Process

On the 1 February 2024, the Embassy of Ireland in Brazil held an event to celebrate St Brigid’s Day.

Honouring Brigid’s legacy of women’s empowerment, the Peace Heroines event focused on the extraordinary Irish women who were involved in the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

The Embassy was honoured to welcome as special guests Claire Hanna MP, Member of Parliament for South Belfast and Deputy Leader of the SDLP; Melanie Lynch, social entrepreneur and award-winning creative founder of Herstory – Ireland’s first comprehensive women’s storytelling platform; and FRIZ, visual artist and creator of a series of new portraits that capture the dynamism, bravery and legacy of the remarkable peace activists of Northern Ireland.

Guests were invited to learn about the role of women through the Peace Heroines exhibition, which captures a diversity of voices and perspectives, featuring 30 women’s stories from all walks of life who played a pivotal role in the Northern Ireland peace process and continue cross-community dialogue and reconciliation projects today.
