Irish in Brazil exhibition

As part of the celebrations for Saint Patrick’s Day, March 2023, the Consulate launched the “Irish in Brazil” exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the National Library of Brazil.
The exhibition was curated by Peter O'Neill, an independent Irish researcher in Brazil and Prof. Dr. Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos, an Irish Studies Professor and recipient of a 2023 Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2024.
Irish citizens in Brazil
The exhibition was an incredible opportunity to tell the stories of Irish citizens in Brazil, and how they and their descendants influenced Brazil’s history and development.
Irish and Brazilian history have long been intertwined. Jesuit missionary Thomas Field, the first known Irishman to establish himself in Brazil in the sixteenth century. Roger Casement, diplomat and Irish nationalist who fought for indigenous people’s rights at the turn of the twentieth century.
Culture to politics
Brazil’s former emperor, Dom Pedro II, visited Ireland in 1877, and the Irish masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels, by Jonathan Swift, was first published in Brazil ten years later.

Irish literature translated into Brazilian Portuguese
The exhibition highlighted the appreciation for Irish culture, in particular Irish literature, in Brazil.
The importance of translations of the works of James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett into Brazilian Portuguese was highlighted along with first editions and other archival material held by Brazil’s National Library on display.
Contemporary Irish writers
The growing reach of more contemporary writers was also highlighted, supported by the strong Irish studies landscape in Brazil, through the Brazilian Association for Irish Studies (ABEI), the WB Yeats Chair at the University of São Paulo (USP), and the Irish Studies Nucleus at UFSC, among others.
The Consulate is grateful to the National Library, the curators and the 11 Guest Writers for their partnership on this important project. We look forward to taking it to other cities across Brazil, and to seeing the story of the Irish in Brazil develop.

Irlandeses no Brasil
Como parte das comemorações do Saint Patrick's Day 2023, o Consulado da Irlanda em São Paulo lançou a exposição “Irlandeses no Brasil” no Rio de Janeiro, em parceria com a Fundação Biblioteca Nacional .
A exposição teve curadoria de Peter O'Neill, pesquisador irlandês independente no Brasil e Prof. Dra. Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos, professora de Estudos irlandeses e ganhadora do Presidential Distinguished Service Award, em 2023.
Cidadãos irlandeses no Brasil
A exposição foi uma excelente oportunidade para contar as histórias dos cidadãos irlandeses no Brasil e como eles e seus descendentes influenciaram a história e o desenvolvimento do país.
A história da Irlanda e do Brasil está entrelaçada há muito tempo - desde o missionário jesuíta Thomas Field, o primeiro irlandês a se estabelecer no Brasil no século XVI, até Roger Casement, diplomata e nacionalista irlandês que lutou pelos direitos dos povos indígenas na virada do século XX.
Cultura e política
O então imperador do Brasil, Dom Pedro II, visitou a Irlanda em 1877, e a obra-prima irlandesa “As Viagens de Gulliver”, de Jonathan Swift, foi publicada pela primeira vez no Brasil dez anos depois.

A exposição enfatizou o apreço pela cultura irlandesa, em particular a literatura irlandesa, no Brasil.
A importância das traduções das obras de James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde e Samuel Beckett para o português brasileiro foi destacada, juntamente com as primeiras edições e outros materiais mantidos no arquivo da Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil.
Escritores irlandeses contemporâneos
O crescente alcance de escritores mais contemporâneos também foi destacado, apoiado pelo forte cenário de estudos irlandeses no Brasil, por meio da Associação Brasileira de Estudos Irlandeses (ABEI), da Cátedra WB Yeats da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), e do Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses da UFSC, entre outros.
O Consulado agradece à Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, aos curadores e aos 11 escritores convidados pela parceria nesse incrível projeto. Esperamos levá-lo a outras cidades do Brasil e continuar vendo o desenvolvimento da história dos irlandeses no Brasil.
