Film Screening: From That Small Island – The Story of the Irish
The Consulate, in partnership with Humanities Texas and Irish Business Network Austin, was pleased to host a screening of “From That Small Island – The Story of the Irish” at The Rosette in Austin last night.
The inspiring documentary offered a sweeping exploration of Ireland’s past, tracing developments from early settlement through to the growth of a global Irish diaspora.
Created by Bríona NicDhiarmada and directed by Rachel Moriarty and Peter Murphy, the documentary is narrated by Colin Farrell and the original score is by Colm Mac an Iomaire. Professor Jane Ohlmeyer of Trinity College Dublin, served as historical consultant and associate producer on the project.
Filmed across 17 countries, the documentary combines historical research with contemporary perspectives to present a compelling narrative of Ireland and its people. Through rich storytelling, immersive visuals, and the latest scientific discoveries, the film paints a vivid portrait of a nation whose influence extends far beyond its shores.
Following the screening, guests enjoyed a Q&A discussion with Professor Ohlmeyer, moderated by Kelsi Tyler, Director of Public Programs at Humanities Texas. The conversation explored themes of migration, identity, and heritage. Professor Ohlmeyer also shared reflections on the development of the project, including the complexities involved in presenting a nuanced narrative from such a vast and complex history.
The evening concluded with a reception sponsored by Ballykeefe Distillery and Coole Swan, offering guests an opportunity to connect and reflect on the enduring cultural, social, and historical ties that link Ireland with communities around the world.
Audiences can continue to explore this story through the four-part series “From That Small Island,” now available on your local PBS stations.
