Celebrating 10 years of Marriage Equality in Ireland
Ireland has been on a journey of social change and transformation in recent decades. Yesterday, we marked 10 years since the Marriage Equality Referendum took place when Ireland voted yes to legalize same-sex marriage. In doing so, Ireland became the first country in the world to provide for marriage equality by popular vote.
On Thursday, May 22, the Consulate General of Ireland in Austin, in collaboration with KMFA 89.5, aGLIFF (Austin’s LGBTQ+ Film Festival), and the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, hosted a special screening of The 34th: The Story of Marriage Equality in Ireland to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Ireland’s historic referendum.
The critically acclaimed 34th documentary, co-directed and produced by Vanessa Gildea and Linda Cullen, chronicles the journey toward marriage equality in Ireland, beginning with the pivotal 2006 case of Zappone v. Revenue Commissioners and culminating in the 2015 constitutional amendment. Through interviews with key figures and archival footage, the documentary highlights the dedication of those involved in the campaign.
The evening provided an opportunity to celebrate progress made, and to highlight the need for further steps to realise the full equality of LGBTQI+ persons in every part of the world. To find out more about how Ireland is celebrating Pride visit Celebrating Pride | Ireland.ie
