Welcome to the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN in Geneva

It is my great privilege to be Ireland’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

Our membership of the UN has been a centrepiece of our foreign policy and our approach to the world since we joined in 1955.

Geneva is home to a wide range of UN bodies including the UN Human Rights Council and the Conference on Disarmament. It is also home to the World Trade Organisation.

It provides headquarters for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; the International Organisation for Migration; the World Health Organisation; the International Labour Organisation; the World Intellectual Property Organisation and the UN Conference on Trade and Development

Altogether there are some 40 international organisations based here alongside more than 400 non-governmental organisations.

We have a dedicated team of colleagues here in the Mission, drawn from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the Department of Health.

It is our mission to make Ireland’s voice heard in all the discussions and negotiations on global challenges taking place in these organisations.

We believe in the fundamental importance of multilateralism and the rule of law; and we believe that our perspective and values, drawn from Ireland’s national story and experience, can make an impact and help bring positive change in our national interest, for a strengthened UN system, and in support of the quality of life and security of people across the world.
