The Stockholm Art Exhibitions bridging Irish and Swedish culture

For the Irish in Sweden, art can be a way to feel at home while living abroad. Sweden's Irish community may be small but they are a lively bunch with a strong sense of togetherness.

For many Irish people who may have moved to Sweden for work, family, or simply a change in environment, it allows them to find a shared cultural identity.

Community members Carrie Cook (left) and Sarah Galligan (right) organised and curated the “Arrivals” Art Exhibition in April of 2024 as a way to create a space where Irish creatives in Sweden could meet, share their work, and get inspired.

Theme of arrivals

The theme of "Arrivals" comes from the shared experiences of moving somewhere new or starting a fresh chapter in life.

Carrie Cook, who also works as an artist, explains: “Everyone has the experience of arriving - a new country, a new job, a new stage in life,”.

“In Stockholm, it’s very hard to come in as an artist and find a platform for creativity,” says Sarah Galligan.

For this reason, the exhibition was all about offering a space for everyone - whether professional artists or those doing art on the side - to share their work and feel included.

"Arrivals" is shaping up to be more than just an art show. It’s a cultural happening that’s starting to make its mark, building bridges between Ireland and Sweden through creativity.

The success of last April’s "Arrivals" art exhibition, showcased a budding appetite for artistic expression and creativity within the community.

It’s not just about showcasing talent, it’s about finding a creative community and a sense of belonging in Sweden.

The exhibition brings together people who share an appreciation for art and creativity offering an alternative way to connect beyond the community’s usual sports or social events.

Sophie, who was one of the 13 Exhibiting Artists, shares: "After the exhibition, there was still a spark of inspiration that continued. It’s not just about displaying art, it’s about creating a community."

Meeting point for creatives

The exhibition serves as a meeting point for like-minded creatives in the Irish community to meet and share their artistic journeys.

Lundkvist McCormack explains: "Art is such an individual process, but being surrounded by others gives you inspiration and a sense of camaraderie."

Especially for newcomers to Sweden, having a space where they can share their stories and experiences makes a big difference.

This inclusivity extended beyond the art itself, with the organisers making a conscious effort to keep participation accessible.

"We wanted to create a space where everyone feels included, without the barriers often seen in traditional exhibitions, like portfolio submissions or high entry fees," says Sarah Galligan.

After the success of the first Arrivals exhibition a second Arrivals Exhibition titled "Beyond the Threshold’’ was held in October 2024, Sophie Lundkvist McCormack came onboard as one of the organisers and co-curators. Carrie, Sarah and Sophie are excited to see how the project will continue to grow.

"Now that we have a pool of artists from the first two exhibitions, we’re hoping to reach new people and make it bigger," says Lundkvist McCormack.

For the second edition, the gallery was open to the public for a four day period, making it easier for more people to come and see what the Irish creative community is all about.

Arrivals Exhibitions are supported by the Embassy of Ireland, Sweden and the Irish Chamber of Commerce in Sweden.
