Appointment of Honorary Consul of Ireland – Botswana

The Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria works to promote Irish interests in South Africa and across our region of accreditation, including Mauritius, Lesotho, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Our work includes engagement with the Irish community, promotion of Irish trade, investment and cultural interests, and fostering strong bilateral relationships. We also provide a range of key consular services.

Subject to approval by the relevant Irish and Botswanan authorities, the Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria is seeking to appoint a new Honorary Consul in Botswana in the coming months.

The Honorary Consul will provide consular assistance and services to Irish citizens in Botswana. They will also assist and support the Embassy in the broader development of economic, business and cultural relations.

The role of an Honorary Consul is, by definition, honorary. It is not salaried and is non-pensionable. Potential candidates should be current legal residents in Botswana and must be fluent in English. They must also be in a position to provide a suitable premises in order to carry out the necessary duties of an Honorary Consul (more details can be provided upon request).

Honorary Consuls receive an annual honorarium of €1,125, a refund of eligible communication costs associated with the role, and retain 50% of consular fees received (up to certain limits).

Expressions of interest, together with a CV, should be sent to the Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria by email to Pretoria@dfa.ie with the heading “Honorary Consul Expression of Interest – Botswana” by close of business on 29 July 2026.

A shortlisting process will be carried out based on the expressions of interest, and a small number of individuals may be invited for interview. At that stage, potential candidates will be asked to supply two written references and to complete a number of forms, including a security vetting form. Any ultimate appointment will be subject to approval by the relevant Irish and Botswanan authorities.

The following categories of person cannot be considered for the role:

• Individuals who occupy a public or government position
• Those who may be unable to deliver consular services due to other commitments
• Anyone who is politically active
• Persons with a real, apparent or potential conflict of interest

Essential Requirements

• Fluent in English
• Resident in Botswana
• Availability to provide consular services during weekdays
• Ability to provide suitable premises

Desirable Requirements

• Familiarity with Irish and Botswanan administrative systems
• Involvement with the Irish community in the region
