Visit to Toruń - October 2025
Ambassador Haughey visited Toruń 1-2 October.
In a meeting with Mayor Paweł Gulewski the Ambassador discussed the security situation in Europe and the war in Ukraine. He also discussed the growing trade and investment between Ireland and Poland, and the potential for further cooperation in tourism and student exchange.
The Ambassador was delighted to meet students and teachers from Cross and Passion College Kilcullen, who had travelled to Toruń to take part in a Model United Nations Conference. The students were among 250 from 11 countries to take part in the event. The Ambassador addressed the opening of the conference, emphasising the appointment of multilateral cooperation, respect for the rule of law, and human rights.
The Model UN Conference was organised by 1 Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Toruń. The Ambassador visited the school to thank the staff for their efforts. The school is home to the Museum of Military History, where for 23 years Piotr Olecki has collected and curated items from Poland’s past. Piotr Olecki very kindly gave the Ambassador a tour of the museum. Among the fascinating and moving exhibits was a poster drawn by prisoners of war in a WW2 Nazi German camp in Toruń: it had the names of men representing an Irish team in a basketball competition in the camp.
