Visit to Elbląg - September 2025

29 September 2025
Elblag canal, northern Poland

Ambassador Haughey visited Elbląg on 26 September.

Elbląg is famous for its Canal, which was named in 2007 as one of the seven wonders of Poland following a poll by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita. The Canal was constructed in the 19th Century, and has a unique system of water powered lifts, which allow the boats on its route to ascend by around 100m. The Ambassador was grateful to be accompanied by Michael Gannon, originally from Roscommon, who has worked as a tour guide in Elbląg for over 20 years.

Michael Gannon is a great expert in the nature of the region, and the Ambassador was delighted to the attend the launch of a new album of nature photography: “Vistula Delta and Elbląg Uplands through Irish Eyes”.

The Ambassador also met the Deputy Mayor of Elbląg, Katarzyna Wiśniewska. They discussed regional security, Irish-Polish bilateral relations, and economic cooperation.
