Ireland’s relationship with Morocco
In 2025, Ireland and Morocco will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The decision to open the Embassy of Ireland in Rabat in 2021 recognised not only the developing relationship but also the important role Morocco plays as a diplomatic, political and economic hub in Africa and in the MENA region.
Shared Experiences
Ireland and Morocco are both located on the westernmost points of our respective continents and Morocco, as well as its Mediterranean dimension, shares an Atlantic perspective with Ireland.
We both have a post-colonial history, a historical experience of large emigration and strong links with our respective communities living abroad.
We continue to build on these shared experiences to strengthen the links across all areas between our two countries.
Cooperation and connections
Ireland and Morocco work together in a sense of partnership and shared values in the United Nations. We are both committed champions of the multilateral system and the rules-based international order.
Our political and economic relations are growing, while culture is an important part of our connection.
Our cultural heritage is at the heart of who we are: friendliness, hospitality, as well as a strong tradition of storytelling and a passion for music, are important features we share.
The increasing number of Irish people who visit Morocco, facilitated by greater connectivity especially by air, has facilitated this movement and those who make it their home permanently recognise the immense warmth of the Moroccan people.
Looking to the future
We also look forward to consolidate the already good exchanges in the field of education, which together with culture and the arts, are rich sources for connecting our two peoples.
Irish and Moroccan companies are exploring further business opportunities, increasing trade, and economic links between the two countries. Scaling up these links will also provide for shared learning and experiences, particularly in areas such as in the agricultural, education, financial and ICT sectors. We also compare our respective experiences and successes in developing our economies.
A great potential exists to solidify and further develop the relationship and to form stronger bonds by working together and by getting to know each other better.
