Support and advice for the Irish diaspora

If you are a member of the Irish diaspora or are planning to move abroad from Ireland, please find guidance and resources that may help.

Returning to Ireland

If you’re planning to return to Ireland, you may wonder what you need to do to make the journey as smooth as possible, and to start your new life in Ireland with confidence.

The Citizens Information Board’s Returning to Ireland Portal, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has a wealth of information to help you plan your move. From how to ship your belongings back home to how to apply for social welfare, the Portal has all the information you need to make your move a success.

Supports while living abroad

Difficulties can arise when living overseas, be it feeling isolated or experiencing a crisis. Through our network of Embassies and Consulates, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides a range of help and support to citizens in distress abroad.

Our Consular Assistance Charter provides details of the services we provide, and those provided by your local Embassy or Consulate.

You can also explore our Diaspora Directory to find organisations in your area that work with Irish communities, including Irish welfare organisations.
