The Irish Doctors Orchestra (IDO) is a remarkable all-island ensemble that brings together medical professionals who are also classically trained musicians.
Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, the IDO provides a space for doctors to channel their love of music as a form of therapy, balancing the stresses of their medical careers by creating music.
The orchestra unites medics from across Ireland for rehearsals and coaching by professional musicians, culminating in public performances that have captivated audiences in Belfast, Dublin, and Limerick.

The IDO follows the tradition of other international doctors' orchestras, such as the European Doctors Orchestra and the World Doctors Orchestra, all of which nurture a creative space where the intersection of medicine and music can thrive.
Beyond the personal benefits for its members, the orchestra’s mission extends to serving communities through its charitable performances, with proceeds often directed to local causes.

Supporting healing, one note at a time
By blending the healing powers of music with the practice of medicine, the IDO continues to inspire and uplift audiences across Ireland. They take the stage with fundraising concerts in support of causes close to their hearts, like their show at SETU Arena in Waterford for a special fundraising concert in support of the Réalta/Waterford Healing Arts programme at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
Under the baton of Waterford’s own Liam Daly, the concert will feature an exciting programme including ‘Maritana’ by Waterford composer William Wallace, the Concerto in F major for Two Bassoons by Johann Baptist Vanhal, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, with a special performance by the Waterford Harp Ensemble.
Join the IDO on Sunday, September 29 at 4:30pm for an inspiring evening of music and to support the healing power of the arts in healthcare. All proceeds will go to the Réalta/Waterford Healing Arts programme, helping to enrich the hospital environment through music and the arts.
