Visas for Ireland
Who needs a visa
Before travelling to Ireland, a traveller should check whether they require either a visa or preclearance approval. Whether you require a visa, or preclearance approval, depends on the nationality stated on your travel document and your reason for travel to Ireland.
Visa required and non-visa required nationalities are listed on the Irish Immigration website.
Shared British and Irish visa programmes
Under the British and Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS), or the Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme (SSVWP), some Indian passport holders who hold appropriate UK visitor visas and enter the UK as a visitor, can travel onwards to Ireland, without the need of a separate Irish visa, once they are inside a valid period of leave to remain in the UK.
To see if you qualify for either of these schemes, please visit the appropriate links below, to understand the eligibility criteria and programme rules. Please note, these schemes are not open to Indian nationals who reside in the UK, even if they also hold valid visitor visas. The schemes are only open to persons who have arrived in the UK as short stay visitors.

Transit through Ireland
You may need a visa if you are transiting through an Irish airport.
There are two methods of transit:
- Airside transit: Where you never pass border control on the way to your connecting flight; and
- Landside transit: Where you pass border control on the way to your connecting flight and technically enter the State.
In Dublin airport, you can only complete an airside transit if, on the same day, you arrive and leave Terminal 2 between 04:00 and 16:00. In all other cases you have to pass border control on the way to your connecting flight, and therefore you must undertake a landside transit.
Only nationals of these countries (including LKA) require a Transit visa to undertake an airside transit. If you are undertaking a landside transit and you are from a visa-required country, then you must apply for a Visit visa, providing these documents.
If you are unsure whether you are undertaking an airside or landside transit please do not contact the Embassy as we cannot advise beyond the above. This is a matter between the traveller, the airlines and the airport.
I have received my visa, when can I travel and how long can I stay?

Beware of visa fraud
Visa applicants should be wary of unscrupulous agents who offer guaranteed visas at inflated prices. Visa fees are listed above, in the event that an agent is seeking much higher rates of payment, then it is likely that the agent is a fraudster.
If you are resident in India, you must attend a VFS centre, in-person, to provide your biometrics. If you are resident in India but received a visa from an agent without attending a VFS centre, then the visa is a forgery.
Remember, there is no requirement to utilise the services of a third-party agent. The most secure way of obtaining a visa is to follow the process, as outlined above, in-person and without the assistance of any third-party agent.
Fake Irish employment permits
Our Embassy has seen an increase in fake Irish documents issued by fraudulent immigration agents and consultants.
The Embassy advises the public not to fall for promises of employment in Ireland, advertised on social media. To work in Ireland you must secure an employment permit and then and employment visa. Some examples of fraud documents are below:
- Fake employment permit;
- Fake eVisa (Ireland does not issue eVisas);
- Fake visas (visa decisions are published each morning. If your application has not been approved, then any visa you have been given by a third party is a fake).
Reporting fraud
The Embassy of Ireland has no role in the investigation, or prosecution, of fraud. If you believe you have been the victim of fraud you should report it to your local police station.
