Ireland's relationship with Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina established diplomatic relations in 1995. In the three decades since, connections between the countries have deepened at all levels.

Strengthening ties

Through bilateral and multilateral political engagement, the increasing numbers of Irish tourists and pilgrims visiting Bosnia Herzegovina, growing Irish investment in the Bosnian economy, and the contributions made by the vibrant Bosnian diaspora to Irish society, our ties have strengthened significantly.

Many Bosnians still recall U2’s legendary 1997 concert in Sarajevo, and the band members are honorary citizens of Bosnia Herzegovina.

Supporting growth, peace and security

Today Ireland and Bosnian Herzegovina enjoy warm bilateral relations, and Ireland’s supports Bosnia Herzegovina’s path to EU membership.

Ireland also continues to support Bosnian civil society and works to promote peace and security for all Bosnians through the ongoing contribution of our Defence Forces to the EUFOR Althea mandate.

New Irish Embassy in Sarajevo

The establishment of the new Irish Embassy in Sarajevo in 2025 is a recognition of these growing connections.

The Embassy provides an exciting platform for the development of the next chapter, one of close and friendly relations between our two countries and peoples.
